What does “maxxing” mean?

Maxxing means going all-in on one thing to get the most out of it. Stick it on the end of almost any word and you get a whole lifestyle: sleepmaxxing is protecting your rest like it’s your job, yapmaxxing is talking your way through life, and nonna maxxing is living slow like an Italian grandmother, with big pots of sauce and nowhere to rush to.

It’s usually said with a wink. Calling your early night “sleepmaxxing” makes it sound like a strategy, and that’s the joke: turning everyday choices into a stat you’re leveling up.

Why is maxxing the word of the year?

Dictionary.com named “maxxing” its 2026 Word of the Year in late October. The suffix had traveled a long way by then, from niche corners of the internet to TikTok captions, group chats and headlines, and it had stopped meaning one thing. Now it’s a way to say what you’re prioritizing, whether that’s rest, focus, friends or adventure.

Where did it come from?

The “-maxxing” suffix started in online forums about improving your appearance, where “looksmaxxing” meant optimizing how you look. TikTok then stretched it to almost everything else, and the lifestyle versions, the ones about how you spend your time, are the ones that took over.

Maxxing vs. mogging

Mogging means outshining someone, usually in looks, and Collins Dictionary picked it as its own 2026 word of the year. This quiz skips that side completely: no looksmaxxing, no mogging, no rating anyone’s face. It’s about what you’re putting your energy into, not how you look.

No. The quiz runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you swipe, drag or tap is sent anywhere or stored, and there’s no sign-up. It’s just for fun, not a personality assessment.
